Five Spanish Art Movies You Must See

The black comedy is one of the cornerstone genres of Spanish cinema. In order to understand a bit more of the Spanish language itself, it's best to watch some Spanish movies while you're taking your Rocket Spanish course. In the black comedy genre, there are five Spanish art movies you must see in order to know a bit more of this very typical Spanish humor. One such movie is “Mala Uva,” directed by Javier Domingo. This movie of how far a father's love will go for his child takes a dark turn when the father is a reformed assassin. Once the daughter professes to be hurt, it's anything goes in this little black jewel!

Another of the five Spanish art movies you must see is by the celebrated director Pedro Almodovar. Drawing on the culture of death in his native La Mancha, 3 generations of women, two living sisters, a teen-aged daughter, and their dead mother, go through life side-by-side in this not so surreal comedy of ancestral influences entitled “Volver”. “Inconscientes” or   “Unconscious” takes a look at the overwhelming effects Sigmund Freud had at the turn of the century on his fellow psychiatrists. When a student of Freud's deserts his very pregnant wife, she takes her brother-in-law in tow to hunt him down. All the clues they have are in his manuscripts of his patients so they must explore the very messy entanglements of their love lives in order to find him.

“Descongelate” is a terrifically funny movie about death. When a cabaret actor named Justo is offered a role by a famous director, everything seems rosy until the director dies at the celebratory dinner the day before the contract is to be signed. Justo's partner Isis suggests hiding the body for a while and everything seems to be working out well until Justo's mother and his ex-con brother get wind of what they're doing.

One black comedy that has a slightly religious note to it is “Sin Noticias de Dios” where the war between good and evil is being won by evil. Heaven's last chance is to win the soul of a notorious boxer so they send their best angel to reel him in. Hell won't just give up, of course, and they sent their best “angel” too. There the fun begins!

The best reason why these five Spanish art movies you must see should be watched is that there is no better way of understanding and learning a language than learning the vocabulary and phrases in a course like Rocket  Spanish and then watching how the language is used in life, even if it's cinematic life. The more of a country's culture you are exposed to, the easier it will be to understand the little nuances of how they speak – and it's a lot of fun!
